Djurgarden lost 1-2 at home to IF Elfsborg in the Allsvenskan's 22nd round on Sunday. A late Elfsborg goal in the 76th minute sealed the defeat after a tight match where Djurgarden had possession but failed to create enough clear chances.
Rasmus Wikström opened the scoring for the visitors in the 44th minute. Djurgarden equalised in the 66th when Jacob Une Larsson headed home from a Kristian Strømland Lien cross. Just ten minutes later, however, Simon Olsson netted the winner for Elfsborg following an Alexander Jensen assist.
Manager Jani Honkavaara made several substitutions in an attempt to turn the game around. Oskar Fallenius replaced Patric Åslund at half-time, while A. Abdulmalik and Max Larsson came on in the 60th minute. Daniel Stensson received a yellow card for dissent in the 39th minute.
Statistically, Djurgarden dominated with 55 percent possession. The side had nine shots to Elfsborg's fifteen, but only two were on target. Elfsborg were more clinical, with three shots on target and two goals.
The defeat means Djurgarden remain third in the Allsvenskan with 41 points from 22 games. The team is ten points behind league leaders Sirius. Kristian Strømland Lien, who provided the assist for the equaliser, is the club's top scorer this season with 15 goals.
Djurgarden now have a break from league action before their next fixture, an away derby against Hammarby FF on October 11th. Hammarby currently sit second in the table, making it a direct clash for the top positions. The team's fixtures show a challenging run-in to the season's end.
