IF Elfsborg took the lead in the 44th minute through Rasmus Wikström. Djurgården equalised in the 66th minute when Jacob Une Larsson made it 1-1 following an assist from Kristian Strømland Lien. The decisive moment came in the 76th minute as Simon Olsson scored the 1-2 winner for the visitors. "An incredible effort away to Djurgården. We come here and dare to play and keep the ball," Olsson said afterwards.
For Djurgården, it meant a broken winning streak and a harsh reality check in the championship race. The team remains second in Allsvenskan with 41 points from 21 games, but the gap to the top has widened significantly. Top scorer Kristian Strømland Lien has 15 goals in 21 appearances this season, but it wasn't enough on this occasion.
Manager Piotr Johansson was clear that it's time to face facts. "It's tough. It's a lot of points and not so many matches left. It's a wake-up call," he said. "Before we even start glancing at anything else, we secure third place first because it's sure to be tight."
With only eight rounds left, the math is unforgiving. Djurgården must now focus on securing a top-three finish, which offers a chance at European qualification.
The schedule ahead is immediately tough with a Stockholm derby away to third-placed Hammarby on October 11th. That match is absolutely key to keep distance from the competitors for the podium places. After that, seven final rounds remain where every point will carry significant weight.
