Hjalmar Ekdal has confirmed that Djurgården showed interest in signing him during the summer transfer window. The 27-year-old Burnley defender says it never reached a point where he had to make a concrete decision.
"How close it was, I don't really know," says Hjalmar Ekdal. "It never really got that far that it was up to me."
The interest from Djurgården, where his brother Albin Ekdal is assistant sporting director, was present but never progressed far enough. Hjalmar Ekdal reveals he and his brother did not discuss the potential move much. He adds that he likes Djurgården and can imagine returning to Sweden in the future, but would not make such a move solely due to the uncertainty at Burnley.
The Lancashire club were relegated from the Premier League last season and now sit bottom of the Championship after eight matches. There, CEO James Holroyd has resigned and head coach Nick Hayen is under pressure.
Meanwhile, Djurgården are having a strong season in Allsvenskan, sitting third with 41 points. The most recent loss came against Elfsborg last weekend.
Hjalmar Ekdal is currently with the Swedish national team preparing for their Nations League opener against Romania on Friday night.
