Djurgården secured their sixth consecutive win by beating GAIS 2-0 in a match dominated by three red cards. Kristian Lien and Bo Hegland scored the goals in a victory that solidifies the team's second place in Allsvenskan.
The match at Tele2 Arena on Monday evening turned chaotic. Oskar Ågren from GAIS received a straight red card in the 59th minute. Two more dismissals followed in the closing stages. Djurgården's Christos Almyras was sent off in the 86th minute, and GAIS's Henry Sletsjøe received a second yellow card and was ordered off.
Manager Jani Honkavaara announced immediately after the match that the club will appeal Almyras's red card. "The referee has already said that it was not a red card so we will obviously appeal," said Honkavaara. Christos Almyras himself defended his actions afterwards. "If you look at the clip, you see that I am trying to avoid him. He locks me, but I am trying to avoid him." he said.
Despite the on-pitch chaos, Djurgården kept a clean sheet for a fifth straight Allsvenskan match. The trio of Matias Siltanen, Miro Tenho and captain Adam Ståhl played the full 90 minutes and were key to the defensive solidity. Kristian Lien opened the scoring in the 35th minute from a Bo Hegland assist. Hegland then made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute after Lien returned the favour.
The six-match winning run has come after a difficult period in August where Djurgården lost back-to-back derbies to Västerås and AIK. The team now has 41 points and remains seven points behind leaders Sirius. Recent form is impressive with five straight league wins and a clear cup victory over Haninge.
